HSBC profit rises but revenue hit by muted economic growth

By Steve Slater

LONDON (Reuters) - HSBC Holdings Plc said pretax profit rose 10 percent to $14.1 billion in the first half, as its three-year cost-cutting plan started to pay off, but earnings fell short of expectations due to a fall in revenue.

Its shares, which had spiked to a more than two month high the previous trading session, were down 3.4 percent by 0843 GMT on Monday.

Europe's biggest bank's pretax profit was up from $12.7 billion a year ago but fell short of the average $14.6 billion expected by analysts, on the basis of figures from 14 banks and brokerages polled by the company.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $34.4 billion as the bank said western economic growth remained muted and growth in China and Asia slowed, while regulatory reforms added costs for banks.

HSBC is focused on cutting costs and restructuring measures which remain essential in an industry struggling to grow.

Stuart Gulliver, chief executive, said in a statement: "Both reported and underlying profit before tax increased in the first half. These results demonstrate that we have continued to make progress on delivering our strategy."

Gulliver, who is two and a half years into his cost-reduction drive, had cut 46,000 jobs by May and sold or closed 52 businesses. He is expected to continue to retreat from countries where HSBC lacks scale.

The bank said in May that employee numbers could fall to between 240,000 and 250,000 by 2016. Gulliver said at the time he would redouble efforts to drive down costs and could cut 14,000 more jobs as part of his push to lift profitability and streamline the complex bank.

HSBC said it would pay a second interim dividend of $0.10 per share, taking the total for the first half to $0.20, up 11 percent on a year ago.

Map locates Venice Beach, in Los Angeles; 1c x 3 inches; 46.5 mm x 76 mm;

(AP) ? The driver parked outside a hotel and surveyed the leisurely summer scene at the Venice Beach boardwalk: Hundreds of people were sitting at cafes, walking along the seashore or shopping at vendors selling jewelry or art.

Then, according to surveillance video, the man got into a large black car, steered around a vehicle barrier and accelerated mercilessly through the crowd, hitting one person after another as bystanders tried desperately to get out of the way.

Saturday's hit-and-run killed an Italian woman on her honeymoon and hurt 11 others who only a moment earlier had been enjoying an afternoon near the beach at the height of vacation season.

A couple of hours later, authorities arrested a man on suspicion of murder after he walked into a police station in neighboring Santa Monica and said he was involved.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, of Los Angeles, remained jailed Sunday on $1 million bail.

Police declined to discuss a motive but Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said there was no indication that the attack was a terrorist act or that anyone else was involved.

By the time it was over, the driver had covered about a quarter of a mile along the boardwalk before fleeing. The entire incident was over in minutes.

Mustafa Balci, 44, and his wife Yesim Balci, 48, were sitting in lawn chairs at their booth on Saturday, as they had daily for the last three years when they saw a large black sedan roaring directly toward them from a side street.

Three people were knocked to the ground and within seconds the car was at their booth. It swerved left, sideswiping a picnic table holding their wares ? the traditional Turkish blue glassware of the eye to ward off the evil eye, and wall hangings of Jesus and Virgin Mary tapestries.

The car hit three customers looking at the items, and slammed into Mustafa Balci's knees pushing him backward, breaking a table, smashing a mirror and scattering everything. Yesim Balci was flung 8 feet, tumbling backward and landing facedown.

"I couldn't see her when I woke up, I looked up and was like where is she? I yelled, 'Are you around? Are you alive?' She yelled back, 'I'm alive,'" Mustafa Balci said. "I thought both of us would be dead."

Balci was helped up by strangers who took him over to his wife. He lied down next to her as paramedics responded to the scene. The couple were taken along with three others to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, treated for minor injuries and released. Yesim Balci had her ankle taped up, blood seeping through the back, and bruises all over her body; she could no longer raise her left arm.

On Sunday, the boardwalk featured the typical summer crowd, people on roller blades, beach cruisers, performers and regular vendors. The Balcis were also back at their booth to take stock of their losses.

A broken picnic table was behind them, and a box of their damaged wares in front of them. They estimated that 90 percent of their goods were broken, at a loss of $6,000 for handmade goods whose raw materials were shipped from Turkey. They don't have any health insurance and aren't sure how they will make up the losses.

"We're not here to work or sell anything, we're here for damage control, to take our stuff and go home and rest," Mustafa Balci said.

The evening melee injured another vendor next to them who did fortune telling, as well as one of the vendor's customers, Balci said.

People were "stumbling around, blood dripping down their legs, looking confused not knowing what had happened, people screaming," said Louisa Hodge, who described "blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk."

The Italian woman was identified as Alice Gruppioni, 32. Her family in Bologna told the Italian news agency LaPresse that she had been on her honeymoon after a July 20 wedding.

Gruppioni worked as a manager for the family business Sira group, which makes radiators. Her father, Valerio Gruppioni, runs the company and was formerly president of the Bologna soccer team, according to LaPresse.

The family declined to speak to The Associated Press on Sunday.

Another person was critically injured. Two others were taken to hospitals in serious condition. Eight suffered less serious injuries, police said.

According to security video and witness accounts, the driver parked next to the Cadillac Hotel and twice walked out to the boardwalk before getting into the Dodge Avenger. He carefully maneuvered between a storefront and metal poles that had been erected to prevent anyone from driving onto the boardwalk.

Then he stepped on the accelerator and plunged into the crowd.

"I heard a big 'boom, boom,' like the sound of someone going up and down the curb, it was super loud," said Alex Hagan, who was working the desk at the hotel.

The driver knocked over two mannequins and an ATM and started hitting people, swerving from side to side and often running straight into victims. Video showed the car struck at least three vendors ? a fortune teller, a couple selling jewelry and a woman who does tattooing.

Two women who appeared to be in their 60s were also hit. Many people ran after the car, screaming and cursing as it sped away, Hagan said.

Golestan Alipour was bartending at Candle Cafe & Grill when the menacing vehicle drew near.

"The restaurant was full. Everybody ran," Alipour said.

Witnesses said the car was traveling at about 35 to 40 mph along the boardwalk.

The driver eventually turned up a side street and headed away from the ocean. The car was later found abandoned less than two miles away, police said.

At the scene, detectives searched for evidence across the boardwalk, which is in a part of Los Angeles known for eccentricities. The 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt ? which runs along the sand a few hundred yards from the ocean ? is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach. It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends.

Hodge said she and her friend, Ashley Taylor, had noted the large number of people walking along the seaside.

"It was a really nice day. There were tons of people out. In fact, we were talking about how packed it was, because we were having a hard time getting through all the people," Hodge said.

The two women stopped to buy ice cream and a couple of hats, which may have saved their lives. They stepped out of a store as emergency crews arrived.

Hodge saw a man and woman lying next to each other, wearing head braces, barely able to move but grasping hands.

Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin said there have been previous problems with motorists accidentally driving onto the boardwalk, especially during the evening, because many entrances aren't blocked and there are no signs warning them about entering a pedestrian area.

However, four yellow metal poles blocked the roadway used by the hit-and-run driver, who squeezed past the barrier by driving onto a sidewalk, authorities said.

"The frightening part," Bonin said, was that this part of the boardwalk was "one of the more protected streets."

The crash was not far from where an elderly driver sped through an open-air farmer's market in Santa Monica in 2003, killing 10 people and injuring more than 70 others.

Investigators said George Weller, who was 86 at the time, mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake and then panicked. He was doing up to 60 mph when he plowed through the market. Weller was convicted of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and was sentenced to probation.

Air France-KLM to cut 2,600 jobs next year

ParisAir France-KLM has confirmed it is to cut 2,600 jobs at its French airline unit next year.

Europe's biggest airline told its central works council that it would seek the cuts through attrition and early retirements. It has set a target of implementing the latest set of cuts by the end of 2014.

The airline said: "Within a difficult economic environment, particularly in France and south Europe, the Air France Group needs to implement the measures required to ensure an enduring turnaround in its short and medium-haul and cargo businesses." Air France-KLM last week said that its so-called Transform 2015 programme is on track, though worse-than-projected economic conditions in many parts of the world are making it harder to effect a recovery.

Thailand Analyzes Cost of Oil Spill

Hi, again! Nice to have you with us on As It Is.

Today we tell the story of a worker at London?s Buckingham Palace. He became famous in announcing the birth of Britain?s Prince George last week. Now, this man is the subject of an international debate.

But first, Mario Ritter takes us to Thailand. A major oil spill there is affecting coastal communities and concerning business investors.?

Thailand is still weighing the cost of a 50,000 liter oil spill in the Gulf of Thailand last weekend. The oil leaked from a pipeline in waters about 20 kilometers away from the coast.

The spill has already reached the popular resort island of Koh Samet. And it is moving toward the Thai mainland.

The operator of the pipeline is part of the state-owned energy company, PTT. The pipeline operator has said the leak was closed quickly. And, it says the oil spill will be cleaned up within a few days.

However, Thailand?s Marine Department has made an official protest against PTT. And, Thai officials have called experts from Singapore to help clean up the spill.

Thailand?s tourism and fishing industries are still estimating the total cost of the damage. The cost to the travel industry alone is estimated at about $70 million.
?
But one observer says it may take weeks to know the full cost of the damage. Sutichai Kumworachai is with Kim Eng Securities. He expects the government to strengthen rules governing the oil industry.
?
He also says companies may be required to save money to pay for such incidents. And, he says they will have to pay closer attention to the long-term environmental effect of oil spills and other problems.

A representative of the environmental group Greenpeace also spoke about the incident. Ply Pirom is a program manager for Greenpeace South East Asia.

He says he does not believe PTT?s claim that the oil clean-up will be quick. And he is calling for more details about the damage to the environment.

?From what happened we can say that this is a good example and alarming to the Thai Government that we are not ready for such an incident.?

Greenpeace has asked the Thai government to reexamine its energy policy and dependence on fossil fuels, like oil and natural gas. The group also wants the government to end oil drilling and exploration in the Gulf of Thailand.

The Environmental Engineering Association of Thailand offers another solution. Its president, Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, says oil companies need to limit human errors.
?
?Most of the time it?s not from the engineering design or construction, but by human being error so that is one of the most important things that first of all must be eliminated.?

In 2009, an oil spill and gas leak by a PTT company in the Timor Sea took 74 days to stop. It is considered one of Australia?s worst oil disasters.

I?m Mario Ritter.

A large crowd waited outside Buckingham Palace in London last month for the British royal family to officially announce the birth of Prince William and Kate?s baby. Millions more watched on television.
?

x

The press Secretary to Britain's Queen Elizabeth and footman Badar Azim place a notice announcing Prince George's birth. Finally, on July 22, a young Indian man carried the birth notice across the palace grounds. He placed it on a decorated golden stand.
?
But few of those watching knew the amazing story of the young man who carried the notice. He is 25-year-old Badar Azim.
?
Mr. Azim grew up in the streets of Kolkata, India. He was educated at an orphanage, a center for children whose parents are dead. The school eventually raised $15,000 to send him to work for Britain?s royal family.

But just a few days after he placed the birth notice on the stand, Badar Azim?s job at Buckingham Palace ended. His visa was not extended. And so he returned to India.
?
His story has increased attention on the British visa system. Last year, the government proposed restrictions to make immigration harder. The restrictions mean that students can stay in Britain only if they find an employer to sponsor them, or if they earn enough money.

Another Indian student, Arjun Sathe, was lucky. He found a job after completing business school.
?
?Everyone pretty much underestimated the reluctance to sponsor a graduate. And essentially people didn?t expect that it would be that difficult.?

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, spoke against the visa restrictions last year when he was visiting India.
?
?I think we need to be very careful that we?re not doing stuff that actively deters foreign students.?
?
The British government said the restrictions prevent the student visa system from being abused. But many British businesses criticized the changes. Universities say payments from foreign students are worth almost $4 billion.

Nicola Dandridge is head of Universities UK, a group representing higher education institutions. She says the restrictions hurt the country.

?These are highly skilled people, many of whom we?d like to stay in this country and do highly skilled jobs. So there is this question of us losing talent in the UK, which we can ill afford to do.?

But Britain appears to be adding new restrictions. It is planning to require visitors from six countries ? India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Ghana ? to pay $4,500 for a visa bond.
?
In a statement, the government said it wants to make sure foreigners do not stay too long. And, it wanted to recover costs if a non-citizen used Britain?s public services.

India has called the measure a step backwards.
?
And that?s As It Is. I?m Kelly Jean Kelly.

Dempsey set to leave England, move to MLS

(AP) ? Clint Dempsey is returning to Major League Soccer, ending his six-year spell in English soccer.

The 30-year-old Dempsey played for the New England Revolution from 2004-06 before joining Fulham in 2007. He moved to Tottenham last summer and scored 12 goals in 43 games, but wasn't a regular.

"We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey," Spurs said in a statement Saturday. "We wish Clint every success for the future."

A star for the U.S. national team, Dempsey wasn't a regular in Andre Villas-Boas' starting lineup. Even so, his move is somewhat surprising because Tottenham could also lose forward Gareth Bale this offseason to Real Madrid.

One of the most successful Americans to play in England's top league, Dempsey was first sold from the New England Revolution to Fulham in 2007. Dempsey spent five years playing at Craven Cottage where he scored 50 goals in 184 league appearances and became a fan favorite. Last year with Tottenham, Dempsey scored seven goals in 29 Premier League matches, scored three times in two FA Cup matches and had two more goals in 10 other games.

As his stock in Europe rose, so did Dempsey's role on his national team. He's played in eight games in 2013 for the United States and scored five times. His next international appearance for the Americans will be his 100th, and he's served as the U.S. captain most of this year when Landon Donovan was out.

Dempsey came to England as an attacking midfielder but has developed into a potent forward in recent seasons, starting up front for the U.S. too.

3 Steps for Regaining Your Love Life Following Trauma | World of ...

3 Steps for Regaining Your Love Life Following TraumaAfter suffering an abusive relationship or sexual trauma, it takes tremendous courage to date. And it can be even more difficult to accept intimacy from a good person.

However, once you know what to look for in terms of roadblocks, the path to love becomes much easier.

Below are three basic steps to help victims heal and find love once again.

1. Find a therapist.

Start your journey of healing with a trained professional. People beginning to date following abuse may have lowered standards. They may be more accepting of bad behavior in dating relationships.

Another common reaction to trauma is to test boundaries or seek high-drama relationships in order to feel intensity or strong feelings. A trained therapist can help identify and heal destructive dating patterns so that these types of relationships are no longer attractive.

2. Practice saying no every day.

It can be difficult to establish boundaries in everyday life after surviving abuse or trauma. You may fear rejection, even from friends and family, or worry that you risk angering others if you say no. But nothing is more powerful than to say no to someone you love, experience queasiness, and realize that your friendship or dating relationship has survived.

Saying no is a great test that the relationships you are forming with other people are healthy and well-balanced. No is not rejection. It is insight into who you are. A good friend or lover will respect ?no.? Even if it is ?no, I do not like that restaurant,? start telling people who you are today.

3. Reciprocate to build trust.

Reciprocation is the safe way to let go of fear and build trust in a relationship without being vulnerable. He or she does something nice, you do something nice back. He or she opens up about something personal, you open up about something personal. Great relationships are built over time where trust is developed by continuous positive interactions.

By slowly opening up to your partner, you can get a better sense of how you feel when you are around him or her. When you are aware of your feelings and acting in accordance with your values, you naturally develop healthy relationships.

Hamstrung: Preventing Injury ? The Health Journal: Fitness, Nutrition ...

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars Loading ...?Loading ...

Written by Dr. Daniel Shaye
?

The foundation of most hamstring injury prevention is warm-up.?Typical hamstring strains come during high-intensity efforts, not during a jog around the block. Be sure you?re fully warmed up before launching into a hard effort or race. In doing so, you?ll be ahead of the game by easing into your efforts.

Prevention Tips

Put it in reverse. No, I don?t mean your car?I?m referring to your body. If your run involves a track, consider reversing directions periodically. This may be an issue on a crowded track where counterclockwise is the norm, but when I do a lot of repeats on a track or course I prefer to run some of them in the reverse ?This balances out some of the stresses on the legs, especially around the curves where leaning in to fight angular momentum is normal. If you have a weaker or less coordinated direction, save your hardest efforts for the side better suited to handle the stress.

?Get strong. Weak muscles won?t serve you well in any sport. Are your extensor muscles strong enough??Try this:?lie with your thighs and legs on a bench or table, your upper torso off the table, with a partner holding your ankles. Hold your body perfectly straight. You should feel your back extensor muscles, and quite likely your glutes and hamstrings. Can you hold this position for a full minute without fatiguing your hamstrings or spinal muscles??Can you hold it for three minutes??A basically competent athlete should be able to hold this position for a full minute without excess strain. A highly fit one should be able to go up to three minutes. If you find yourself struggling, consider working your extensor muscles, both back extensors and hamstrings along with the gluteus maximus. You may also decrease your risk for back pain.

Get coordinated. Hamstrings don?t always strain because they?re weak. They may strain because the right dominates the left, or because the lateral set is weak compared to the medial pair, or because they are weak compared to the quadriceps. They may also strain because they don?t turn on when they?re supposed to, or don?t turn off enough when they need to. Hamstrings do something called ?paradoxical extension,? actively contracting along with the quads while the foot is on the ground-based portion of the running gait. Training hamstring, quads and related muscles to function efficiently and together may be called ?neurological patterning.?? Think of it as teaching the instruments of your body?s ?orchestra? to play together under the supervision of your ?conductor??your central nervous system. I especially like to train this through three exercises:? the 1-legged squat, the lunge and hip flexion exercises. The first two teach the hamstrings to function even as their antagonists are active. The last one teaches the hip flexor muscles to activate, reflexively telling the hamstrings to take a back seat as their antagonists take over. [See images under ?Hamstring-Friendly Warmups?]

Get aligned. The low back and hips relate directly to the hamstrings. A fixated or ?stuck? sacroiliac joint, for example, can inhibit normal pelvic and hip extension, causing hamstrings to have to work overtime or inhibiting them due to subtle pain signals. Dysfunction of joints in the low back, or even disc problems, can also wreak similar havoc. Get structurally aligned before launching into an exercise program that might ingrain your problems. Remember, practice doesn?t make perfect?perfect practice makes perfect.?

Hamstring-Friendly Warmups

I mentioned warm-ups earlier. No, I don?t mean do anything that takes hours, or anything too complicated. Here?s my warm-up routine, for example:

1. Move. If you?ve been off your legs before your run (in a car, or in your bed), start by just walking about or literally shaking a leg or two. Get used to the movement.

2. Neuro mobilizations. Perform some gentle neuro mobilizations of your hamstrings and the sciatic nerves (the large nerve trunks down the backs of your thighs). Sit on a step or bench and straighten out one leg, then the other a couple times. Do the same with your head and trunk slightly flexed, which will tension the nerve and hamstring a tad more. Don?t do this to excess, just enough to wake up the area and give it signals that it needs to move, freely.

Standing hamstring stretchNeuro mobilizers

?

?

3. Lunge. In a forward-facing stance, feet at shoulder width, step out with one leg in a gentle lunge stance. Then, maintaining balance and control, reach forward and brush the ground by your forward foot, followed by raising both arms overhead in an arc (it?s a nice stretch for a stiff neck and back, too). Feel the quads, the glutes, the core and the hamstrings all active throughout the motion. Then do the same on the other side. Do a little sideways movement, gently waking up the full range of muscles around hips, thighs, and ankles.

Lunges

4. Begin running?gently. ?Don?t worry about your pace for the first couple of minutes, however embarrassingly slow it may be. In fact, it may be a couple miles before you?ve hit stride and rhythm.

You?ll note that there?s not a lot of static stretching in this warm-up. The goal is to seek overall flexibility and exquisite control, not to become a stretching legend or yogi.1 Easy motion is the majority of warm-up;?and inherent in motion is some stretching. If you want to work on flexibility, do so after your run, or take a yoga class (or better yet, both).

Do what feels right for you. If what works for me doesn?t suit you, create your own routine. ?And if nothing seems to work, seek professional help?(see prior column under ?Treatment Options?).

I?ll see you on the roads and trails, my friends.

?

1? Committed to flexibility work, to the point of excess??Consider that certain forms of INflexibility (no, that?s not a typo) are correlated to improve running performance. Perhaps I?ll visit that topic in a future column.
