Hillary Clinton hospitalized: Tough end to successful 2012?

Hillary Clinton has been hospitalized for a blood clot. The setback comes at the end of a very successful year for her professionally.

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / December 31, 2012

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, seen here in Ireland, was sent to the hospital Sunday after being diagnosed with a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered earlier this month.

The New Year holiday is providing an unfortunate coda to what Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton might otherwise judge a personally successful 2012.

On Sunday, she was hospitalized after doctors discovered a blood clot related to a concussion she had suffered earlier this month. Her spokesman said she would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at least into Tuesday for observation.

And on Monday, a Senate report faulted the State Department for failing to take adequate steps to protect the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, where an attack killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans on Sept. 11.

Yet the former first lady and senator from New York has earned mostly favorable reviews as America?s top diplomat. Secretary Clinton?s wonky detail-oriented style proved a good fit for the grinding top State Department job. When she steps down in January she will be the most traveled secretary of state in US history, according to the Associated Press, having visited 112 countries in the course of her diplomatic duties.

Her reputation with the public remains high. In fact, she reached an unprecedented benchmark Monday when a Gallup poll named her the ?most admired? woman in the nation for a record 17th time.

Since her first year as first lady in 1993, Clinton has lost the ?most admired? Gallup vote only three times, to Mother Teresa in 1995 and 1996, and to Laura Bush in 2001.

?Hillary Clinton?s first-place finish this year further solidifies her position as the most often named Most Admired Woman in Gallup?s history,? writes Gallup editor Frank Newport.

Clinton beat out Eleanor Roosevelt, who won the vote 13 times, for this notional title. Margaret Thatcher is third, having finished on top in the voting six times.

According to Pew Research, Clinton has enjoyed consistently high public ratings throughout her term at Foggy Bottom. On Dec. 12 she was very close to an all-time high Pew rating, with 65 percent of the survey respondents saying they held a favorable view of her.

But as Pew notes, Clinton?s reputation with voters has plummeted at times. Her ratings dropped in 1992, when she waspishly commented that she ?could have stayed home and baked cookies? rather than work on policy issues. They fell again when she defended her husband during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

But each time her reputation rose again. She, rather than her ex-presidential spouse, might truly deserve the title ?comeback kid.?

?On four separate occasions over the past 20 years, Clinton?s favorability ratings have fallen sharply ? but each time they recovered. It is rare for a political figure to accomplish that feat once in a career, much less four times,? writes Pew.

Given her prominence, Clinton is now suffering a spate of wild conspiracy theories related to her illness, notes the right-leaning Weekly Standard. In one such out-there theory, the secretary of State in fact was injured and a top Navy SEAL commander killed when her transport aircraft crashed near the Iranian city of Ahvaz.

Pakistan: 9 militants shot dead, dumped on road

(AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials say they have found the bodies of nine militants dumped in the North Waziristan tribal region.

Three intelligence officials say the nine people were shot several times in the head and chest. Their bodies were found Monday off a road in Pir Kili village. They said the dead men were linked to the Pakistani Taliban.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

North Waziristan is a hub of militant activity near the Afghan border.

The militants' bodies were found one day after 21 tribal police personnel who had been abducted were found dead in another tribal region.

The incidents illustrate the conflicts among warring factions and militants that plague Pakistan.

The WarZ Legit player review. - PC - =ADK= Gaming Community

The War Z ? A Legit Review by Emmjay
To start out, I want to say that I have never played Day Z, so I am not going to compare that mod to this game.??As far as The War Z goes, I bought the game about an hour before Steam pulled the game.??In that time I have played about 50 or so hours and here is my review based on personal experiences and thoughts and suggestions.

First off, this game is more a survival PVP in a zombie world and not a zombie survival game.??Most players, myself included, shoot any other player that they come across.??Why???The fear is that they will kill me if they get the chance.??This is survival of the fittest, not working as a team.??Even if someone in proximity chat states that they are friendly, how can we know that they are telling the truth???The few items that I may have in my backpack makes it worth killing anyone that I see just so I can get back to a safe zone and put them in my global inventory.

Second, there are major issues with movement.??There is no autorun, no cars or other speedy form of travel, and no swimming.??Now, I could almost believe that no swimming was intentional.??All that the dev?s have to say is that water was the carrier of the zombie virus.??That is why people can?t drink the water, can?t refill water bottles, and can?t even go in water past their knees.

Third, gear.??Going around and collecting items, with the hope of finding a primary or secondary weapon is exactly what every new player has to do.??And what happens when they find that M16 or Colt Anaconda, or whatnot???Most either try to get back to a safe zone and put it in their global inventory.??All the while there are players out there with REALLY GOOD weapons and they aren?t afraid to use or lose them hunting other players.??It took me until today, 12/29, to find my first sniper rifle.??Now I have the opportunity to be on the offense and not run around scared I will die and lose my gear.
Finally, what is the purpose of this game???There is no driving force in this game.??The website says that to stay alive is what this game is about.??So, by them, all I have to do is sneak to a town, get food and drink, make it back to a safe zone and relax.??Well, that is just boring.??Without a motive to kill zombies (like the skills that the dev?s say is coming) there is little point to do anything else, much less stop or reduce pvping.

There are some things that this game does very well.??I like the longer day and night cycles, with shadows and darkness and such.??It does make the game world, in some small way, seem more alive than it really is.??Ambient noises like birds, insects, and water also add to a sense of realism.

The biggest thing that I am torn about, and at times it could go either way is that if you purchase something in the marketplace and then die with it in your inventory, you lose that item, almost for certain permanently.??Now, I can understand why they might have done it this way, so that players care about what they have and that they don?t take major risks with those items.??Then again, they could have done it only so players keep buying those items with real money, enlarging the coffers of the dev?s.
What have they done wrong???Well, just about everything else.??Zombies are little more than a small obstacle when out searching for gear.??Their animations are laughable, their detection radius is a joke, and are really easy to kill (as long as you don?t have a flashlight).??Many, if not most buldings cannot be entered.??The skyscrapers in Boulder at best allow you to enter only up to the second floor.??There is also a complete lack of variety in building designs.??Every major building in this game is the same.??Same interior and exterior layout.??Oh, and I am not going to forget to mention all the rampant hacking and duping??going on.

So, what can Hammerpoint do to fix this game???First off I want to know what you are DOING.??I don?t care what you are planning on doing, what you hope??to do, or what you would like players to do.??You know, relate it like this -??I am planning on going to Paris, but when, who knows? What I am DOING is saving money for that trip.

You need to fix your relationship with your playerbase.??With the Steam frakup, and all the complaining, you need to do something to either thank your loyal fanbase in some MAJOR way, or do something just as major to get back those players that you have lost.??You need to stop all the micro transactions.??Why should I pay for the game, pay for more than one player skin, pay for a clan, pay for starting with something more than a crappy flashlight, etc.??You went from a one hour respawn timer to a four hour respawn timer (but you could pay to respawn faster) and then reverse that idea.
Hammerpoint, you need to stop lying.??You blaming us players for ?misreading? what was posted on Steam.??You posted false advertising, admit it, and drive on.??The biggest lie you tell is right on the homepage.??You state that there are no hidden fees.??Well, yes there are.??You don?t tell players that if you want something more than the basic model, want to start with more stuff, or even form a clan, there is price for that.??What you don?t state, in short, is that there are many, many microtransactions to be had to those who want to spend money.

After all the above, what do I thing of the game???In truth I like it.??While it is in a rough state, there is so much potential to be had here.??While I am scared in this game, it is not to be scared if zombies come and kill me, I am scared because another player might kill me.??I love the mistrust, the complete abandon of what we call ?normalcy?.??It?s anarchy baby, have fun while you can because you will die, you will lose your gear, and you will hate it.

9 killed in tour bus crash along Oregon highway

(AP) ? A tour bus careened through a guardrail along an icy Oregon highway and several hundred feet down a steep embankment Sunday, killing nine people and injuring more than 20 others, authorities said.

The charter bus carrying about 40 people lost control around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84, according to the Oregon State Police.

The bus came to rest at the bottom of a snowy slope. More than a dozen rescue workers descended the hill and used ropes to help retrieve people from the wreckage in freezing weather. The bus driver was among the survivors, but had not yet spoken to police because of the severity of the injuries the driver had suffered.

Lt. Greg Hastings said the bus crashed along the west end of the Blue Mountains, and west of an area called Deadman Pass. Stretches of highway in the rural and agricultural area of east Oregon tend to be icy in winter months.

The bus slid down the hill and landed upright, with little or no debris visible around the crash site.

St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton treated 26 people from the accident, including some who were treated and then transported to other medical facilities, said hospital spokesman Larry Blanc.

In addition to the people who were transferred from St. Anthony to La Grand and Hermiston, Ore., and Walla Walla, Wash., Hastings said. Others were taken directly to hospitals further away, including Boise, Idaho, and Portland, Ore.

I-84 is a major east-west highway through Oregon that follows the Columbia River Gorge.

Umatilla County Emergency Manager Jack Remillard said the bus was owned by Mi Joo travel in Vancouver, B.C., and state police said the bus was en route from Las Vegas to Vancouver.

A woman who answered the phone at a listing for the company confirmed with The Associated Press that it owned the bus and said it was on a tour of the Western U.S. She declined to give her name.

A bus safety website run by the U.S. Department of Transportation said Mi Joo Tour & Travel has six buses, none of which have been involved in any accidents in at least the past two years.

The bus crash was the second fatal accident in Oregon on Sunday morning. A 69-year-old man died in a rollover accident.

A spokesman for the American Bus Association said buses carry more than 700 million passengers a year in the United States.

"The industry as a whole is a very safe industry," said Dan Ronan of the Washington, D.C.,-based group. "There are only a handful of accidents every year. Comparatively speaking, we're the safest form of surface transportation."

Childhood Obesity Rates Declining in the US According to New Study

A national study? conducted by the Centers for Disease? Control and Prevention has found that obesity is declining among 2 to 4 year olds from low income families. If this trend continues then parents and health advocates like myself are doing the right thing and childhood obesity has finally passed its peak.

Researchers used height and weight measurements taken from 27 million children who were participating in the federal Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) from 1998 to 2010.? The obesity rates among those children declined to 14.9 percent in 2010.

According to the report a 3-year-old-boy of average height (about 3 feet), is obese if he weighs 37 pounds or more and and extremely obese if he weighs 44 pounds or more.

?The declines we?re presenting here are pretty modest, but it is a change in direction,? said Heidi M. Blanck, one of the study?s authors and the acting director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the disease centers. ?We were going up before. And this data shows we?re going down. For us, that?s pretty exciting.?

There are several different theories as to why childhood obesity is on the decline. Breast feeding has increased since 2000.? Breast milk is the best nutrition for infants 12 months and under and is proven to help children obtain a healthier weight. The Federal Trade Commission found that companies are spending less money on food marketing to children, which may also have a positive impact on childhood obesity rates. Data from 48 major food and beverage marketers also found that cereals marketed to children ages 2 to 11 had about a gram less sugar per serving in 2009 than in 2006 and slightly more whole grain. The WIC program also made significant changes and is providing more funding for fresh produce and less for sugary juice beverages.?

I am hopeful that we are winning this fight against childhood obesity in the United States.? Federal programs like, Let's Move and WIC are doing an excellent job educating families on the importance of feeding their children healthy and nutritious foods.? The food and beverage industry is offering healthier products with less sugar.? Educational materials including books, websites, social media, and PSA are more readily available to families of all income levels.? Our society needs to make these changes permanent. The future of our children depends on it.

Insight: Under siege, Japan central bank wakes up to political reality

TOKYO (Reuters) - Within a day of Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party sweeping to power in elections this month, elite bureaucrats in Japan's central bank rushed to ready what amounted to a surrender offer.

Abe had run his campaign with a relentless focus on economic policy and had called on the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to take drastic steps to end the nation's long bout of deflation, or else face a radical makeover at the hands of parliament.

The vote had become an unexpected referendum on the BOJ itself, and the bank had lost.

Senior officials concluded that to preserve the BOJ's scope to act in a future crisis, it needed to move quickly to show it recognized reality, according to people familiar with the hurried deliberations. Abe had won a mandate for more forceful monetary easing, and Japanese taxpayers were frustrated with an economy slipping back into its third recession in five years.

In the early afternoon of December 18, two days after the vote, BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa was to pay a courtesy call on Abe. But even before then, a post-election plan had taken shape: the BOJ would consider the kind of ambitious 2 percent inflation target that Abe had insisted was needed to pull Japan out of nearly two decades of deflation and diminished expectations.

It was an about-face for Shirakawa who, since taking his post in 2008, had argued that by focusing too narrowly on consumer prices, the BOJ could miss signs of an asset price bubble like the one Japan experienced in the late 1980s.

But increasingly his own senior officials and members of the BOJ's policy-setting board were ready to take risks and test unorthodox and unproven measures that Shirakawa had long resisted, such as an unlimited debt-fuelled monetary expansion, officials familiar with their thinking say.

"The LDP's win was just too big, and it won an election calling for a 2 percent inflation target. If that's the will of the people, the BOJ must respect that," said a source familiar with the central bank's thinking. "Otherwise, the BOJ could lose everything, including its independence."

The central bank is now on track to pump 120 trillion yen ($1.4 trillion) into the economy - equivalent to the value of six Googles - even though skeptics argue that this tide of money cannot break Japan's real economic logjam: falling wages.

Instead, the skeptics say, the risk is that investors would end up concluding that Japan needed the central bank to cover its debts - a recipe for a selloff of government bonds, which already amount to twice the size of gross domestic product.

But after Abe's landslide election victory - and years of limited money-printing having failed to revive growth - senior BOJ officials wanted it understood they were ready to join the experiment in what media and investors called "Abenomics", a potentially high-octane mix of fiscal and monetary stimulus.

Abe's victory seemed to establish that millions of Japanese shared his views, people in the bank came to believe.

They felt he now held the trump card in any future standoff with the BOJ over monetary policy - a mandate to amend the BOJ Law in a way that would give the government power to impose a binding target on the central bank, or fire its governor.

BLIND EYE

In a symbol of the political significance of his monetary policy push, Abe scheduled a one-on-one meeting with Shirakawa just hours after setting up a first phone call as prime-minister-elect with the U.S. President Barack Obama.

Two days after the election, the central bank governor visited Abe at the fortress-like headquarters of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Abe reminded Shirakawa of his campaign promises. He wanted to see the BOJ sign a "policy accord" that would oblige it to support Abe's reflationary agenda and commit to a 2 percent inflation target, Abe told reporters later.

After the meeting, Shirakawa rushed through a scrum of reporters into his waiting car and declined to say what was discussed. However Abe, in another break with protocol, gave an unusually detailed recounting of the 15-minute meeting.

"The governor just listened," he said.

The next day, the BOJ began a scheduled two-day policy board meeting. The central bank announced its third shot of monetary stimulus in four months by adding another 10 trillion yen to its asset-buying program - essentially committing to create more money to buy government debt.

It marked the fifth time this year that the central bank had expanded asset purchases - its most active year in terms of monetary expansion in a decade.

More significantly, the BOJ also made a direct concession to Abe and pledged to review its existing inflation target of 1 percent at its next scheduled meeting in January.

The BOJ was retreating from the cautious stance of its classically trained boss, Shirakawa, and essentially turning a blind eye to the potential, long-term drawbacks of excessive money printing that he had long warned about.

Only a month earlier, many BOJ officials had preferred to hold off on taking action until the January meeting, according to sources familiar with the deliberations.

Shirakawa, in particular, had been in no mood to act again in 2012, let alone commit to studying a higher inflation target. He had been convinced that the BOJ's monetary easing steps in September and October were enough to stave off risks to the economy for now, the sources said.

LONG & WINDING ROAD

Shirakawa's five-year term ends in April and people close to him say he has no interest in staying on. But decisions taken under his watch over the next few months could influence the central bank's credibility well beyond his departure.

A fan of the Beatles, Shirakawa, 63, has often warned against the risk of an overly loose monetary policy.

He once described Japan's struggle to recover from its late 1980s asset bubble as "The Long And Winding Road", a reference to the plaintive Beatles song. He said rich economies risked repeating Japan's "lost decade" of slow growth if they kept ultra-easy monetary policy in place for too long.

But for the past year, a tight-knit group of officials in the BOJ's Monetary Affairs Department has been nudging the bank in the opposite direction. They favor more aggressive easing, such as a big increase in government bond buying, according to officials with knowledge of those discussions and former central bank officials who remain in close contact with policymakers.

Among the actions now under consideration at the BOJ is an open-ended commitment to buy government bonds or an expansion in the type of assets it purchases, the officials said.

Another idea, floated by board member Koji Ishida, is to nudge rates to zero by scrapping a 0.1 percent interest rate the BOJ pays on excess reserves parked with the central bank.

Proponents argue that such steps would hold down interest rates on bank and corporate borrowing, encourage money to flow to private investors and help weaken the yen.

Anticipation of BOJ action has already pushed the yen to a two-year low against the dollar. Tokyo stock prices have climbed to a 21-month high on the expectation for higher earnings for currency-sensitive exporters like automaker Toyota Motor Corp.

"Markets already expect the BOJ to set a 2 percent inflation target, so the question now is what the central bank would do to achieve it," said Masaaki Kanno, a former central banker and now chief economist at JPMorgan Securities in Tokyo.

"If it wants to influence currency rates, it needs to give markets the impression it is easing aggressively."

Abe has said he will choose a successor to Shirakawa whose views are closer to his own. He has not made up his mind yet on his favored candidate but aides say he may prefer someone with negotiation and management skills, rather than an academic, to oversee the BOJ as it pushes into unknown territory.

PRESSURE REMAINS ON

With the LDP's coalition partner, the New Komeito, Abe has enough votes in the lower house to overrule the upper house on key votes, including a potential revision of the 1998 BOJ Law that gave the 130-year-old bank its long-awaited independence.

Under this law, the central bank is guaranteed independence to guide monetary policy without political interference and is mandated to pursue price stability. Abe has discussed a law revision to impose a price target on the central bank and add a requirement to maximize job growth to its mandate.

Abe is already using threats of a BOJ Law revision to nudge the central bank into meeting his demands.

Koichi Hamada, a Yale University professor whom Abe admires, said the BOJ would have to accept more legal accountability to achieve its price target and beat deflation.

"Generally speaking, the BOJ is making an effort. But there is hardly any change to its pace of 'too little, too late'," said Hamada, 76, who was appointed a special adviser to Abe's cabinet and also taught Shirakawa at the University of Tokyo.

"It is necessary to amend the BOJ law," he said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

'A TOUGH SPOT'

One challenge now for the BOJ is setting a higher inflation target that is seen as credible. In February, the BOJ said that it would aim to achieve 1 percent price growth.

But Shirakawa, who joined the BOJ during Japan's high inflation years of the early 1970s, and many other officials in the bank have resisted calls for a higher target. For one, Japan has not seen 2 percent inflation in the past two decades. The last time it did was during the real estate and stock market bubble of the late 1980s to early 1990s, when the BOJ was criticized for missing signs of an overheating economy.

Some officials share Shirakawa's doubts over whether further monetary easing will work. Two key metrics - the BOJ's holdings of government debt and the balance of deposits parked with the central bank - are already at record highs, yet the BOJ's pump-priming measures have failed to put an end to deflation.

Nationwide core consumer prices slid 0.1 percent in November from a year earlier after flat growth in October, which followed five straight month of declines.

Another concern for the cautionary wing of the BOJ centers on the unusual structure of Japan's economy. Japan's jobless rate - at 4 percent - is half that of the United States. But wages remain on the decline, down 1.1 percent in November from a year earlier to mark the third straight month of falls.

Unable to fire workers in mass layoffs because of rigid labour rules, Japanese firms are unwilling to raise salaries. Without a rise in wages, the only practical way overall prices could go up would be through higher commodity and fuel costs which would curb consumption, not boost it, the BOJ has argued.

Setting a 2 percent inflation target next month would require the BOJ to awkwardly steer around the arguments that Shirakawa and other officials have long made.

"If the BOJ contradicts too much of what it's been saying all along, that would put its credibility on the line. People will no longer believe what the BOJ says anymore," said Izuru Kato, chief economist at Totan Research Institute in Tokyo.

The BOJ also worries about a potential bond-market backlash. Its ultra-easy policy has pushed down five-year bond yields below 0.2 percent. But some investors balk at buying too many 20-year and 30-year bonds, concerned that Abe's pledge of big fiscal spending would strain Japan's already worsening finances.

Much will depend on Shirakawa's successor and how well the central bank communicates its policy target to investors - an area where Shirakawa has struggled by his own admission.

After the December 20 easing, his aides convinced him to try the kind of visual aid often used on Japanese television - a large flip chart - and to aim his presentation at the TV cameras. An economist suspicious of sound bites, he looked uncomfortable.

"The BOJ is pumping huge amounts of money and easing very aggressively. But that fact isn't understood well perhaps because of our restrained character. There's a huge perception gap," Shirakawa said.

"I hope this chart is broadcast on television and helps more people understand our point," he added.

(AP) ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 of complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

Should President Obama label the Westboro Baptist Church a hate group?

The "God Hates Fags" gang most recently threatened to picket funerals for the victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

More than 260,000 people have signed a White House petition to designate the Westboro Baptist Church ? notorious for picketing soldiers' funerals with signs reading "God Hates Fags" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" ? as a hate group. The petition, the most popular so far to be submitted to the Obama administration's "We the People" site, came in response to the church's threat to picket funerals for the victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., which the church views as God's punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality. "Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment," tweeted church spokesman Shirley Phelps-Roger on Dec. 15. (It appears the group did not follow through on that vow.)

A petition needs only 25,000 signatures to require a response from the White House, which means Obama's team will have to consider whether the church's hateful rants qualify it as a hate group. Such a move would strip the church, which is largely composed of leader Fred Phelps' family, of its tax-exempt status, and could lead to more severe legal penalties if the group is ever convicted of breaking the law. Westboro has already been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and other civil rights groups."Their actions have been directed at many groups, including homosexuals, military, Jewish people and even other Christians," according to the petition. "They pose a threat to the welfare and treatment of others and will not improve without some form of imposed regulation."

SEE ALSO: Why the U.S. must change its presidential succession rules

As if the massacre at Newtown wasn't enough of a nightmare, it's utterly loathsome to imagine throwing in a bunch of gay-bashers dancing on the graves of dead babies. But anti-gay sentiment is hardly new in America. And as WalkerBragman at DailyKos notes, Westboro is "not the first to blame homosexuality for catastrophic events. Jerry Falwell famously blamed 'the gays' for 9/11." Indeed, the Supreme Court has already ruled that Westboro's demonstrations are protected by the First Amendment, which prompted Congress to pass a law that requires protests to be held at least 300 feet away from military funerals.

So while it's refreshing to see a White House petition that isn't laughably ridiculous ? like trying to deport CNN anchor Piers Morgan ? it seems unlikely that the Obama administration will grant hate status to a group that, so far as anyone knows, hasn't threatened violence or committed any illegal acts.

The Flat Bush Neighbourhood Policing Team gained the support of the local community and businesses to upgrade the home, which was in such a poor state of repair the family was on its last chance with HNZ.

Constable Karen Ancell said 11 children lived at the house with their 32-year-old mother who was pregnant.

"We have stepped in to get the house up to scratch so the family can make a fresh start," Ancell said.

"They are struggling, to say the least, and some of the children are starting to come to police attention."

More than 40 volunteers helped with the make over while businesses donated materials and services.

The volunteers fumigated the house, repaired damaged walls and painted the interior.
Outside they tidied the grounds, erected raised garden beds and planted vegetables.

Police, Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity representatives also donated furnishings to completely refurnish the house.

The community's input for a family they had never met was huge, Ancell added.
?
"It's about giving a family a fresh start. They are in a good place to change now, whereas in the past that hasn't been the case."

But giving them a home they can be proud of is just the first step. The police are also working to give the family the tools to become good members of society.

They will receive mentoring, budgeting advice, counselling and health checks as well as anger management and parenting training.

"They are in a bit of debt and it is very difficult to make headway out - it's a vicious circle."
