Crammed into the pages of this e-magazine is a first-hand account of the struggle to construct America's most sustainable city, a survey of developments in stateside manufacturing and much more. Eyes-On packs into some US-made bags, Weekly State tallies STEM job growth and IRL returns with more of our everyday gadgets. We'll be taking next week off to recover from the feast of hot dogs and impending firework burns, so be sure to swipe this edition to tide you over until our return.

U.S.-Russia Syria talks end without agreement

GENEVA (Reuters) - U.N.-brokered talks on Tuesday aimed at setting up a conference to end the war in Syria ended with U.S. and Russian officials failing to agree on many questions, including the dates and participants, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.

The two sides will return to their capitals to discuss how to take the process forward, but there was still no agreement on who would represent the Syrian opposition and whether Iran would be at the table, he told reporters after the five-hour talks.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet next week, and further talks on the conference were expected to follow, a U.N. statement said.

Wendy Sherman, the U.S. delegate at the Geneva talks, declined to comment.

Kenyan shilling dips on month-end dollar orders, shares slip

NAIROBI (Reuters) - The Kenyan shilling weakened on Friday as importers bought dollars to meet end-month payments for their supplies, while shares broke a two-session rally.

The shilling was posted at 85.85/95 to the dollar by the 1300 GMT market close, weaker than Thursday's close of 85.65/85.

The currency has weakened 1.2 percent since east Africa's biggest economy proposed to introduce a capital gains tax last Thursday. That move coincided with a broad sell-off of emerging market assets over the U.S. Federal Reserve's hints that it will soon end its bond-buying stimulus programme.

The shilling is still 0.5 percent stronger so far this year.

"Towards end-month we're going to have more demand than supply as importers come in to buy dollars," said a trader at one commercial bank.

However, traders said the central bank could intervene to sell dollars if the shilling fell past the 86.00 support level.

"We may see the shilling break the 86.00 level," said Bank of Africa in a daily note. "However, the central bank is expected to remain vigilant should the shilling's depreciation gather unusual pace."

In stocks, the main NSE-20 share index lost 0.1 percent to 4,706.80 points, dragged lower by profit-taking on market heavyweights.

Equity Bank, the country's largest by assets, dropped 3.7 percent to 32.50 shillings, while mobile phone services company Safaricom shed 2.2 percent to 6.75 shillings.

The two stocks accounted for 70 percent of Friday's traded volume.

In the debt market, bonds worth 3.9 billion shillings were traded, up from 1.9 billion shillings on Thursday.

Help for African rhino poaching survivors

June 21, 2013 ? In Africa hundreds of rhinos are shot or immobilised by poachers every year to supply ground up horn for the Asian medicine market. It is reputed to make men virile and treat anything from stomach ache to cancer -- all just a myth.

South Africa has more rhinos than most other African countries because conservation and breeding have been more successful there. Consequently it has become a major target of the poaching syndicates and many of the rhinos are slaughtered and maimed. Their horns are hacked off -- usually while still alive, leaving the injured animals to die.

Many of these rhinos are too badly maimed to survive but a group of vets has taken on the often heart-breaking task of trying to rescue and treat the animals that are not killed. Although many do not charge for this, the costs of immobilising, testing and treating these animals is still enormous requiring helicopters and trucks as well as large quantities of expensive drugs.

Thousands of miles away from this rhino bloodbath veterinary pathologist Professor Fred Reyers, from the School of Life Sciences, University of Lincoln (UK), has been interpreting laboratory blood analysis data, sent to him electronically, to guide the vets who are treating the badly injured survivors.

He said: "Poachers use two approaches: shooting the rhino, with the intention of killing which requires marksmanship and a heavy calibre rifle. Many rhino are just stunned and/or wounded sufficiently to make it possible to saw or hack the horn off. They often have serious shrapnel injuries which tend to become infected and, if left lying on one side for several hours, are disposed to muscles on the lower side dying off because the sheer mass of the animal prevents blood flow. The second approach is the use of an immobilising dart gun -- however the poacher does not give an antidote.

"The septic bullet tracts, septic horn-removal lesions and dying muscles all contribute to sepsis and this can lead to secondary damage to vital organs, like the kidney, lung and liver. These syndromes are well recognised in car crash victims, explosion injuries, battlefield wounded and burn patients. The actual lesions are almost impossible to assess accurately from the outside. So, to get an idea of how serious and/or advanced these injuries are and the resulting problems, we rely on measuring a number of blood parameters that reveal the extent and stage of inflammation and organ failure. Based on the interpretation of these blood tests, the attending veterinarian can adjust the treatment protocol."

Prof Reyers works closely with South Africa's top rhino vet Dr William Fowlds, trustee for Chipembere Rhino Foundation in South Africa.

Dr Fowlds travels all over South Africa attending to the rhino who have survived a poaching attack and helping other wildlife vets manage these cases.

He said: "This year alone South Africa has lost more than 2.5 rhino per day. Most of the poaching occurs in the northern Kruger National Park, a park the size of Israel. The park borders on Mozambique and there is a deluge of poachers crossing the river to get to the rhino. Trained rangers put their lives at risk, for very little salary.

"I count myself truly blessed to be able to live my dream as a wildlife vet in a part of Africa that satisfies my senses and fills my soul. One of my many privileges is that I get to work with rhino in the wild. These living dinosaurs are truly iconic symbols of our successes and failures as custodians of this planet. The current rhino situation is a dying testimony of our conservation efforts."

Dr Fowlds will be giving a talk at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Wednesday, 18th September. Entitled "The Changing Face of the Rhino," Dr Fowlds will be supported by Bear Grylls and Virginia McKenna OBE of Born Free Foundation.?

After their brutal SmackDown battle ended in a?controversial count-out victory for Daniel Bryan, WWE.com has learned that the submission specialist and Randy Orton will once again lock up Monday on Raw.

With the score now even at one victory apiece, Monday's battle will be the rubber match in what has been an epic series of bouts that culminated on the June 17 episode of Raw, when WWE COO Triple H deemed Bryan too injured to continue and awarded the match to The Viper. For his part, Bryan was hot about not being able to finish the match, and he let Triple H know it. Researchers Have Found a Way To Cram 1,000 Terabytes Onto a Single DVD

Now that its bigger brother Blu-ray has stolen the spotlight, paltry 4.7 GB DVDs have slowly started to fade into obscurity. But could they be poised for a comeback? A trio of Chinese scientists have discovered a breakthrough process that could, at least in theory, allow a DVD to store a whopping 1,000 TB?or a full petabyte?of data. Suck on that, Blu-ray.

The exact science and technology behind the discovery is detailed in this paper, but here's the gist of it in layman's terms. The storage capacity of a DVD is limited by the size of the laser beam burning the small pits that represent the streams of data. Blu-ray increased this capacity by switching to even smaller blue lasers, but the storage capacity of that technology maxed out as well.

You see, back in 1873, a German physicist named Ernst Abbe found that a beam of light focused through a lens could not be any smaller than half of the light's wavelength. And for visible light, which is used to burn digital media discs, that's around 500 nanometers. So instead of breaking that law, the researchers found a way to work around it using two beams of light that cancel each other out. And by ensuring the beams don't completely overlap, a much smaller beam can be created to burn even smaller pits on a disc, massively increasing its capacity.

There's a still a lot to be perfected before this technology could reach consumers. Like how these incredibly tiny pits of data can be actually be read after they're created. And since writing 1,000 TB of data would take forever, developing faster ways to burn discs will also be necessary before consumers are ready to adopt the new technology. But the prospect of DVDs and Blu-rays taking a quantum leap in storage capacity is still incredibly exciting. [Nature Communications via The Conversation via Slashdot]

OCD & Your Cat, Dog or Family Pet | Psych Central

My son Dan suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder so severe he could not even eat, and his anxiety levels were often so high, he could barely function. It would have been ludicrous for me to suggest he try yoga, or meditation, or any other stress reduction technique to help him feel better when, in fact, he could hardly get off the couch.

But he could pet our cats.

Our beautiful cats, Smokey and Ricky, both so lovable with distinct personalities, helped Dan immensely during those dark days. Whether they sat on his lap, curled up near him on the couch, or let him hold them, they allowed him to relax and brought him momentary peace. Sometimes they purred so loudly they sounded like engines revving, and this soothed Dan. Other times they would engage in various cat-like antics, inciting a rare, but oh-so-cherished laugh from our son.

They didn?t bombard him with questions, asking if he was okay, or if he was hungry, or what was wrong. They were just there with Dan, and for a short time, his focus was diverted from his obsessions and compulsions. Our pets were able to care for Dan in a way the rest of our family could not.

An article in the April 15, 2013 issue of Time magazine explored how animals grieve. I found it fascinating, and no matter how you might interpret the various studies discussed in the article, I think it is hard to argue with the belief that animals do indeed form relationships, and are empathetic. What more does it take to comfort someone?

For those obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) sufferers who struggle with germs and contamination issues, caring for a pet can elicit many triggers. Cleaning a litter box, letting a dog lick your face, or having to tend to a sick pet are just a few examples of what OCD sufferers might have to deal with. Surprisingly, I have heard from many with OCD who are amazed themselves that these situations do not cause their OCD to spring into action. Could it be that their love for their pets transcends the fear and anxiety of OCD?

When my son moved into his own apartment last year, one of the first things he did was foster a cat from a shelter. He has always been an animal lover, and was looking for a furry friend to keep him company. As he knows, life is full of surprises, and come to find out, his new companion has a host of medical problems and needs to take medication to control her seizures.

Instead of returning the cat to the animal shelter (something I very well might have done), he has embraced his role as her caretaker. Whether we have OCD or not, I believe this experience of putting another?s needs ahead of our own is worthwhile. Focusing outward instead of inward gives us a different perspective on our own lives and challenges.

So it works both ways. We take care of our beloved pets, and they take care of us. Whether our furry friend is a specially trained service dog who can sense an imminent anxiety attack (yes, it?s possible!) or an adored rabbit, pets can benefit us all in countless ways. They require us to slow down our lives, they make us laugh, and they give us unconditional love. And for those who are suffering, they provide the much-needed comfort and serenity that often can?t be found elsewhere.

Autophaser improves sample analysis in areas such as cancer, Alzheimer's and oil spills

June 20, 2013 ? A new software package allows researchers to vastly improve the performance of one of the key tools used to analyse medical and environmental samples.

Autophaser, developed by the University of Warwick and Aberystwyth University, enables researchers to make use of significantly more data when using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers (FT-ICR MS).

FT-ICR is a powerful tool for identifying chemicals and biochemical components in complex mixtures and is used by scientists analysing substances across a wide range of sectors including medical, environmental, and commercial areas such as the petroleum industry.

The software, which is free for academic purposes, will allow much greater confidence in interpreting results. For commercial purposes, the software is available to licence from Warwick Ventures, the commercial arm of the University of Warwick.

The normal method of processing data from FT-ICR MS -- magnitude mode -- effectively ignores half of the information generated, so mass accuracy and resolution are not as high as they could be.

However Autophaser allows researchers to make use of this otherwise discarded data by converting FT-ICR MS results to absorption mode. This gives an improvement in spectral resolution of up to three times and a 41% improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio.

Using Autophaser, researchers will see more peaks in the spectrum, get better sequence coverage in proteins and have more confidence in peak assignments.

Dr David Kilgour of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick said: "Major decisions are made every day in commercial, medical, and environmental settings on the basis of FT-ICR MS so it's vital that researchers have access to the most accurate processing methods.

"Autophaser unleashes the full potential of this type of mass spectrometry and really pushes back the barriers to the kinds of problems it can tackle.

"By making this software available for free to academic researchers, we envisage its benefits will be felt across many biomedical areas, for example cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's, the pharmaceutical and polymer industries, as well as in environmental analysis such as detecting pollution after oil spills."

Although the advantages of absorption mode FT-ICR MS have been known for nearly 40 years, the technique is still not widely used because a key mathematical hurdle presented a barrier.

The researchers at the University of Warwick and Aberystwyth University solved the problem using a kind of artificial intelligence known as a genetic algorithm.

The research behind the software was conducted by David Kilgour and Peter O'Connor at the University of Warwick and Mark Neal at Aberystwyth University; based on earlier work by Peter O'Connor and a student in his group, Yulin Qi.

Autophaser was recently presented at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry annual conference in the US.

Ontario seniors given dangerous drug combination, London researchers find

Some Ontario doctors have ignored warnings about mixing two common drugs and now London researchers say they know the toll ? hundreds of seniors needlessly suffering kidney failure and some even death.

Lipitor is the most-prescribed drug in Canada and research has shown it reduces heart attacks and death. Clarithromycin and erythromycin are antibiotics used to fight sinus infection, pneumonia and other respiratory infections. But combining the two can be life-threatening.

That risk has long been noted among many dangerous drug interactions doctors and pharmacists are supposed to heed.

But tens of thousands of Ontario seniors were given both anyway and hundreds were hospitalized with kidney failure from 2003 to 2010, a new London study shows.

?We?re hoping physicians and pharmacists will take more care,? said Dr. Amit Garg, whose study was published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Previous warnings were based on small-scale studies in which a dozen or two healthy volunteers got both statins and an antibiotic and their blood was tested.

But the London study looked at 75,000 Ontario seniors who got both drugs between 2003 and 2010. Within 30 days of getting the antibiotics, hundreds suffered kidney failure and were hospitalized and more died than a control group that didn?t get both drugs.

?It?s preventable,? says Dr. Amit Patel, an internal medicine resident at London Health Sciences Centre and co-author of the study.

That sort of real-world impact should persuade doctors to avoid prescribing both drugs, said Garg, a researcher at Lawson Health Research Institute, a kidney specialist at the London Health Sciences Centre and a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

?Until now, the clinical and population-based consequences of this potential drug-drug interaction were unknown,? Garg said.

Physicians should look at alternatives when co-prescribing these combinations of drugs:

• Stop using the statin temporarily while taking the antibiotic.
• Use a different type of antibiotic.

FTC planning to take on patent trolls, hopes to reduce frivolous lawsuits

Sick of endless patent wars yet? According to the New York Times, so is the Federal Trade Commission. Referencing the usual persons briefed on the matter, the NYT reports that FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez is preparing to propose an inquiry that will put patent-assertion entities -- companies that exist solely to buy and collect royalties on patents -- under federal scrutiny. If approved, patent trolls that catch the FTC's attention will need to detail how they operate and if their legal proceeds pay out to the original patent owner. The chairwoman is expected to explain the proposal in more detail at a patent law workshop later this week. According to the NYT, Ramirez doesn't have any specific company in mind, but aims to investigate companies that might hamper innovation. With any luck, the inquiry will help curb spurious litigation and rampant patent trolling -- something most of us can probably get behind.

Hanley Ramirez capped a six-hit day with a pair of RBI singles in the nightcap. Still, he looked quizzically at a group of reporters when they gathered to talk about perhaps his best day of an injury-marred season.

"It's all about Puig," he said.

Not quite, but Mattingly thinks adding the Cuban with just 15 major league games of experience to a lineup along with Adrian Gonzalez and Ramirez may key the Dodgers getting out of the NL West cellar.

"Hanley, for me, I've said it since he came over. I think he's one of the best hitters in the game," Mattingly said. "The way Yasiel's swinging the bat, if Adrian continues to swing the bat the way he's capable of, that's a pretty potent trio of guys."

Chris Capuano (2-5) pitched three-hit ball for six innings in his comeback from the disabled list. The Dodgers rebounded from a sloppy loss to former teammate Hiroki Kuroda (7-5) in a matchup between injury-ravaged teams with $200 million payrolls.

"Would've been better to get two, but we'll take one," Mattingly said. "It felt good."

In the first meeting between the teams in New York since the Dodgers clinched the 1981 World Series title with a Game 6 victory at old Yankee Stadium, Ichiro Suzuki homered, drove in three runs and made a spectacular catch on the warning track for the Yankees.

New York got help from reliever Ronald Belisario's two errors on the same play in a three-run seventh.

The clubs played a split doubleheader because of a rainout Tuesday night. The announced attendance for both games between the old October rivals who've met in a record 11 World Series topped a total of 80,000, although there were many empty seats.

The Dodgers started out quickly against Phil Hughes (3-6), who allowed a season-high 10 hits and five runs in six innings.

"You've got to hit your spots," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You can mix some good pitches and try to do some of that, too, but it comes down to not making mistakes and he made some mistakes."

The first four batters reached on singles with Puig bunting for a hit and Ramirez getting his fifth hit of the day - an RBI single. Gonzalez also drove in a run but Tim Federowicz grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the rally.

Gonzalez doubled in the third and scored on Andre Ethier's two-base hit after Ramirez made an out for the first time.

Ethier helped quash a Yankees rally in the fourth, throwing out Robinson Cano trying for a double with none out to the delight of 85-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, who was making his first foray into Twitter.

"I think Andre Ethier has done a really good job in Center Field. Especially for someone who has played Right Field for years. (hash)VinScully," he tweeted.

Puig homered to right field leading off the seventh to make it 6-0.

In the opener, Puig tried throwing out a runner at first on a single to right field. He was also caught trying to turn a routine single into double in the first inning - then made it work on a ball hit into only a slightly better spot in the eighth, eliciting an ovation from the very vocal Dodgers fans, who out-hollered Yankees fans on many occasions.

The cheers were especially loud from all fans for Mattingly in his return - even if he was wearing the wrong shade of blue.

The Bleacher Creatures chanted "Donnie Baseball!" during each game, and fans cheered a video tribute in the opener and a live shot of Mattingly in the visitor's dugout in the nightcap. The 1985 AL MVP tipped his cap in appreciation.

In the second game, Puig bunted for a hit, was hit by a pitch, stole a base to help manufacture a run and hit his fifth homer.

"You can recognize the tools right away," Girardi said after Game 1. "There's an awful lot to like about this kid."

Ramirez went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer in the eighth in the day game, and drove in Puig twice to help make Capuano's return from a strained upper back muscle easy. He entered 1-4 with a 5.45 ERA in eight games - six starts - and has been on the DL twice. But he was nasty Wednesday in his first scoreless start since August 2012.

"I was a really happy with the way I felt," Capuano said.

Kuroda gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings to outpitch South Korean rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-3) in the afternoon. Ryu allowed a two-run double to Lyle Overbay and a homer to Suzuki in the sixth.

With runners on first and second in the seventh, Belisario let Vernon Wells' meek pop in front of the mound drop for an error. Jayson Nix advanced to third on the drop and scored when Belisario threw the ball into center field trying to get Cano at second base. Belisario hit Thomas Neal with a pitch, then Suzuki greeted Paco Rodriguez with a blooped two-run single to make it 6-2.

Ramirez hit a two-run homer off Preston Claiborne after Suzuki robbed Gonzalez of an extra-base hit in the eighth to pull the Dodgers to 6-4. But Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth and struck out Puig to end it for his 25th save.

"I felt so happy to face the best, not only the best pitcher in the league but the best closer," Puig said through a translator. "I wanted a base hit off him but he beat me like he beat everybody in the big leagues."

NOTES: New Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the second game. Before the game he talked with Rivera in the dugout. ... The Dodgers optioned outfielder Alex Castellanos to Triple-A Albuquerque. Castellanos went 0 for 2 in the opener.

Mumford and Sons cancels Bonnaroo performance

MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) ? Mumford & Sons has canceled its headlining performance at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee.

The decision comes after bassist Ted Dwane received treatment this week for a blood clot on his brain.

The band made the announcement on its Facebook page.

The band postponed three shows earlier this week after the blood clot was discovered, but hoped to play Bonnaroo on Saturday night.

There is no word on what act will replace Mumford & Sons in the headlining slot in front of 80,000 fans.

Dwane is recovering from the procedure and was not ready to play Saturday.

Rather than perform with a replacement, the London-based Grammy-award-winning folk rock band decided to pull out.
