University City District has completed a new pedestrian plaza at 42nd Street and Woodland Avenue on an area it referred to as a ?lifeless traffic island.?
UCD worked with Philadelphia?s Office of Transportation and Utilities and the Philadelphia Streets Department to green the Woodland Avenue Pedestrian Plaza with trees, planters and tables. It sits next to the campus of the University of the Sciences and was designed and completed by Think Green of Glenside, Pa.
This is the first project under Philadelphia?s Pedestrian Plaza Program, which looks to identify barren areas of asphalt and concrete and find a way to convert them into public plazas and parks. Next spring, UCD plans to transform another area at 48th Street and Baltimore Avenue into a pedestrian plaza.
